 History of the abbey

St. Benedict founded the "Badia Casini Montis" (Abbey of Monte Cassino) in 529, where he wrote the "Regula" for monks, which is still observed in all the monasteries of the Christian world. He was buried in the abbey church, but his grave was so obscured that flourished in the Middle Ages a legend that the body had been moved to the "Badia Florensis" (Abbey of Fleury, also known as St. Benoit-sur-Loire).

The monastery was built on an inaccessible location, overlooking the valley of the River Liri and Casilina (road built by the Romans in 350 BC and was always one of the most important streets of the Papal States and the Kingdom of Naples), so it was the center of fierce battles for control of the region and the trade, so the monks were forced to build around the abbey walls and defensive towers.

In 577 the Lombards destroyed the abbey, but the monks rebuilt it a larger (589) CJE became richer thanks to donations from pilgrims but also popes, emperors, kings and nobles. The "Land of St. Benedict" (the patrimony of St. Benedict) consisted of a large number of fields, farms, vineyards, churches and palaces in all the towns in the region: Frosinone, S. Germano (now Cassino), Gaeta, Capua and the islands of Ponza and S.Stephen! Monte Cassino became a particularly important artistic and cultural center with a famous library and a large church.

The Saracens destroyed the monastery (883), which was again rebuilt in Romanesque, two earthquakes (1231 and 1349) it was so damaged even rebuilt in Gothic style. A few years later, the abbot was awarded the title of Bishop of Cassino (since then all the abbots of Monte Cassino were the Bishops of Cassino): by that time the abbey church was elevated to Cathedral of Cassino.

The Renaissance was a period of peace and prosperity, the monks wanted to expand the abbey and passed the project to Donato Bramante and Antonio da Sangallo; later (1625) commissioned the famous architect Cosimo Fanzago to renovate the old Gothic church with marbles , frescoes and Baroque decorations.
